Assessing "significant extent" with multiple drugs

When a defendant handles several types of drugs, courts must examine whether the combined quantities warrant the stricter provision – not merely confirm that no single drug reached the threshold alone.

When a defendant handles several types of drugs, courts cannot simply state that no single drug reached a "great extent." Instead, the court must examine whether the quantity of each drug meets or approaches the threshold of a significant extent and whether the combination of drugs warrants using the stricter provision. This principle prevents offenders from evading harsher penalties by dealing in multiple smaller quantities.
