Overview

Not all traffic offenses are merely administrative matters. In the Czech Republic, serious traffic incidents can result in criminal prosecution — particularly where a driver is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, causing bodily harm, causing death, or fleeing the scene of an accident.

Foreign drivers are at particular risk because they may not understand the local legal framework, may face loss of their driving license under their home country's rules, or may be detained until the outcome of an investigation is clear. Even a seemingly routine accident can escalate into a criminal matter.
